Gut Microbiota and Effect on Immune Suppressants in Transplantation

We are determining whether variations in stool microbiota are associated with mycophenolate mofetil metabolism and side effects (e.g., anemia, leukopenia, diarrhea). We are utilizing metagenomics, metatranscriptomics and experiments in an anerobic environment to understand these mechanisms. Towards that end, we have developed a number of microbiome based assays in the laboratory to understand the variation in immunosuppression drug metabolism.

Genomics & Pharmacogenomics of Transplantation

Assesses allele variants in recipient and living donor genes across pathways (including drug metabolism) associated with kidney allograft function and various clinical kidney phenotypes. We are utilizing genome wide association studies, spatial genomics and advances in microscopy to better understand the variation in kidney allograft function post-transplant.
